Immigration Lawyer for Eastern New Mexico

Eastern New Mexico · Immigration Law

Five counties in New Mexico.
Two go to Albuquerque. Three go to El Paso.

The line runs between Portales and Roswell. Ninety miles apart, and the federal office that decides your case is different on either side of it.

Almost nothing written for eastern New Mexico says this out loud. People drive to the wrong city, or assume the closer one, or take the answer a neighbor got in a different county. You are not trying to learn immigration law. You are trying to find out which office is yours.

Start with something checkable.

The thing people get wrongCurry and Roosevelt go to Albuquerque. Lea, Chaves and Eddy go to El Paso. It is decided by your address, not by which city is closer to you or which one you have been to before.

The county seat is not always the closest town, and we do not pretend it is.

Two of these counties have a seat that is farther from this office than their biggest town. Hobbs, which is not the seat, is 109 miles. Lovington, which is the seat, is 106. In Eddy County it runs the other way: Artesia is 171 miles and Carlsbad, the seat, is 179.

That sounds like trivia until somebody quotes you a distance to plan a trip around. We publish the figure for the town you actually live in, and we do not substitute the seat because it reads better.

There is no New Mexico office, and this page is not going to imply one.

The Law Office of Gilda McDowell is in Lubbock, Texas. There is no office in Clovis, Portales, Hobbs, Roswell or Carlsbad. What there is, is the drive, the phone, and a first conversation that happens before anyone gets in a truck. A hundred miles is a day, not a morning, and nothing gets batched with a guess.

How a citizenship case runs from eastern New Mexico

  1. We read the file before you file anything. Applying reopens your whole immigration history under INA § 318, and since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, which is answered with a Notice to Appear rather than a denial.
  2. We count the days, not the years. Under INA § 316(a) the five-year route needs 913 days of physical presence. Married to a citizen, INA § 319(a) cuts it to three years and 548 days. Counted from your actual travel.
  3. We confirm your office before anything is scheduled. The table above is the starting point, and your address is what settles it.
  4. Biometrics come first, then the examination. Both in the same city for every county on this page.
  5. We build the character record early. Two or more letters from U.S. citizens who are not family can support waiving the neighborhood investigation altogether.

The counties we have written up so far

Three of the five have their own page. The other two are being researched and are not published yet, because a page with a hole in it is worse than no page.

Questions we get from eastern New Mexico

I live in Hobbs. Albuquerque is in my state. Why would I go to Texas?

Because Lea County reports to El Paso.

The federal map does not follow the state line here. Lea, Chaves and Eddy are worked out of El Paso, Texas. Curry and Roosevelt are worked out of Albuquerque.

My cousin in Clovis was told Albuquerque. I am in Roswell. Same answer?

No. Those two counties are on opposite sides of the split.

Clovis is Curry County, which goes to Albuquerque. Roswell is Chaves County, which goes to El Paso. Ninety miles apart and two different offices.

Does the firm have an office in New Mexico?

No. One office, in Lubbock, Texas.

Anyone advertising a New Mexico storefront for this firm is not this firm. The address is 2405 20th Street, Lubbock, and the phone is answered in English and Spanish.

Can applying for citizenship put my green card at risk?

It can, and any lawyer who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

It reopens your entire history, including the original residency filing. Since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, and that is answered with a Notice to Appear.

Does the interview happen in English?

The requirement is real and the exemptions are real too.

The civics and English requirements come from INA § 312. Age and years as a resident can remove the English half: 55 or older with 15 years, or 50 with 20. Civics can then be taken in your own language with an interpreter, at your expense.
