Immigration Lawyer for Roosevelt County, New Mexico

Roosevelt County, New Mexico · Immigration Law

A university and forty dairies.
One federal office decides both.

Portales is nineteen miles from Clovis. Near enough that people assume the two counties work the same way, and they do on this one point: both report to Albuquerque.

What people here get told is a mix. Somebody heard El Paso. Somebody heard the university handles it. Somebody heard you have to drive to Santa Fe. You are not trying to learn immigration law. You are trying to find out which of those is true.

Start with something checkable.

The plain-English answer for Roosevelt County

Naturalization is how a permanent resident becomes a U.S. citizen. Anywhere in Roosevelt County, from Portales to Elida, your case runs through the same federal office.

  • Under INA § 316(a), the five-year route needs five years of continuous residence, 913 days of physical presence, and three months in this district before filing.
  • Married to a citizen? INA § 319(a) cuts that to three years and 548 days, if the marriage holds the whole time.
Pro tip for Roosevelt CountyRoosevelt County goes to Albuquerque, not El Paso. Same side as Curry. The opposite of Lea, Chaves and Eddy. Portales is about 106 miles from this office.

One hundred and six miles, and a county where the answer is not the nearest city.

US 70 runs through Portales, with NM 88 and NM 206 feeding the county off it. This office is in Lubbock. There is no Roosevelt County office, there is no New Mexico office, and this page is not going to imply one. What we have is the drive, and we make it.

One hundred and six miles changes something practical: it is a day, not a morning, so the first conversation happens by phone and nothing is batched with a guess. What we ask you to bring is what nobody expects. Not the green card, which everyone remembers, but the record of every trip out of the country, because the statute counts those in days.

ENMUThe only four-year university in the 25-county footprint

Peanuts, dairies, and the only four-year university in the footprint.

Portales Municipal Schools enrolls 2,519 students (NCES, 2024-25) out of an office on South Abilene. Roosevelt County grows Valencia peanuts and produces more certified-organic peanut butter than anywhere else in the country, runs roughly forty dairies, and is home to Eastern New Mexico University, the only four-year university anywhere in the twenty-five counties this office serves.

That combination produces two very different immigration conversations in the same county. A dairy runs seven days a week and does not stop for a weekday appointment in another state. A university brings families who arrived on one status years ago and have been layering paperwork ever since. Both end up in the same Albuquerque office, and both get the same answer about what the days actually add up to.

How a citizenship case runs from Roosevelt County

  1. We read the file before you file anything. Applying reopens your whole immigration history under INA § 318, and since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, which is answered with a Notice to Appear rather than a denial. Better we find that than an officer does.
  2. We count the days, not the years. 913 or 548, counted from your actual travel. Saying "about two and a half years" is how a case gets denied for somebody who drives down to see family every December.
  3. Biometrics come first, and they are in Albuquerque. Not Lubbock and not El Paso. Roosevelt County reports to Albuquerque for both federal steps.
  4. The examination is in Albuquerque too. You are never required to bring a lawyer at all, and we will tell you when you do not need one.
  5. We build the character record early. Two or more letters from U.S. citizens who are not family can support waiving the neighborhood investigation altogether. Almost nobody writes about this.

English and adult learning near Portales

A family petition does not come with an English test. The case that usually follows it does. Once a relative is here and eventually files for citizenship, reading, writing and speaking English becomes a requirement, and for a lot of long-settled families that is the step that stalls everything years later. We have not yet verified an adult education provider inside Roosevelt County, and we are not going to list one we have not checked. A law office prepares the case. A classroom prepares the person.

Questions we get from Roosevelt County

Portales is nineteen miles from Clovis. Do we go to the same place?

Yes. Both counties report to Albuquerque.

Roosevelt and Curry are on the same side of the New Mexico split. Lea, Chaves and Eddy go to El Paso instead. Which side you are on is decided by your address, not by which city is closer to you.

I milk seven days a week. When am I supposed to do this?

The first conversation on your schedule. The two appointments, with notice.

Appointment dates come from the government and they arrive with lead time. A dairy does not close, so the trips get planned around the rotation rather than sprung on it.

My family came through the university. Does that change anything?

Not the count. It usually changes the paperwork trail.

Years of layered filings mean there is a record, and the record is what an officer reads. That is the argument for pulling your own file before you apply rather than after.

Can applying for citizenship put my green card at risk?

It can, and any lawyer who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

It reopens your entire history, including the original residency filing. Since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, and that is answered with a Notice to Appear.

Does the interview happen in English?

The requirement is real and the exemptions are real too.

The civics and English requirements come from INA § 312. Age and years as a resident can remove the English half: 55 or older with 15 years, or 50 with 20. Civics can then be taken in your own language with an interpreter, at your expense.

Roosevelt County.
Let's talk.

One call tells you which route you are on, whether anything already filed changes the path, and what the next twelve months actually look like. If the answer is not yet, we'll say so.
