Immigration Lawyer for Lea County, New Mexico

Lea County, New Mexico · Immigration Law

Lea County cases
are decided in Texas.

You have been in Hobbs a while. The kids came up through Hobbs Municipal Schools, you know the rigs run whether or not anyone in Santa Fe is paying attention, and the green card is still in the drawer where you put it.

Search for an immigration lawyer from here and the results are in Albuquerque, most of a day away, or a directory that has never made the drive. One will ask you to call a 202 area code. You are not trying to learn immigration law. You are trying to work out who is real.

Start with something checkable.

The plain-English answer for Lea County

Naturalization is how a permanent resident becomes a U.S. citizen. Anywhere in Lea County, from Lovington to Jal, your case runs through the same federal office, and that office is in Texas.

  • Under INA § 316(a), the five-year route needs five years of continuous residence, 913 days of physical presence, and three months in this district before filing.
  • Married to a citizen? INA § 319(a) cuts that to three years and 548 days, if the marriage holds the whole time.
Pro tip for Lea CountyHobbs sits less than four miles from the Texas line, and that line is the one thing about your case that does not matter. Both federal appointments are in El Paso. Hobbs is about 109 miles from this office. Lovington, which is the county seat, is about 106.

The state line is the only thing out here that is not federal.

US 62 and US 180 run east into Texas and SR 18 runs the length of the county. This office is in Lubbock. There is no Lea County office, there is no New Mexico office, and this page is not going to imply one. What we do have is the drive, and we make it.

One hundred and nine miles changes something practical: it is a day, not a morning, so the first conversation happens by phone and nothing is batched with a guess. What we ask you to bring is what nobody expects. Not the green card, which everyone remembers, but the record of every trip out of the country, including the runs down to see family, because the statute counts those in days.

10,121Students in Hobbs Municipal Schools
15,161Approximate enrollment across Hobbs, Lovington, Eunice, Jal and Tatum

The biggest school district in this entire service area is in Hobbs.

Hobbs Municipal Schools enrolls 10,121 students. Lovington enrolls 3,415, Eunice 748, Jal 567 and Tatum 310, for about 15,161 across the county (NCES, 2024-25).

For comparison, the largest district anywhere on the Texas side of this footprint is Seminole, at 3,096. Lea County is not a small place a long way off. It is the largest market this office serves, and it runs on mining, oil and gas extraction, retail and education.

How a citizenship case runs from Lea County

  1. We read the file before you file anything. Applying reopens your whole immigration history under INA § 318, and since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, which is answered with a Notice to Appear rather than a denial. Better we find that than an officer does.
  2. We count the days, not the years. 913 or 548, counted from your actual travel. Saying "about two and a half years" is how a case gets denied for somebody who drives down to see family every December.
  3. Biometrics come first, and they are in El Paso. Not Lubbock. Lea County reports to El Paso for this step, which is the single most common thing people get wrong about a New Mexico case.
  4. The examination is in El Paso too. Not Albuquerque, which is what most people assume because it is the state capital's field office. You are never required to bring a lawyer at all.
  5. We build the character record early. Two or more letters from U.S. citizens who are not family can support waiving the neighborhood investigation altogether. Almost nobody writes about this.

English and adult learning near Hobbs

A family petition does not come with an English test. The case that usually follows it does. Once a relative is here and eventually files for citizenship, reading, writing and speaking English becomes a requirement, and for a lot of long-settled families that is the step that stalls everything years later. We have not yet verified an adult education provider inside Lea County, and we are not going to list one we have not checked. A law office prepares the case. A classroom prepares the person.

Questions we get from Lea County

Where is my citizenship interview if I live in Lea County?

The USCIS El Paso Field Office, in Texas.

Not Albuquerque. Lea, Chaves and Eddy counties all report to El Paso, while Curry and Roosevelt go to Albuquerque. Assuming the state capital's office is yours is the most common mistake made on a New Mexico case.

We are four miles from the Texas line. Does that change anything?

Not for your case, and that is the point.

Where you live decides one thing: which office interviews you. A Lea County address sends you to El Paso whether you shop in Hobbs or in Seminole.

Can applying for citizenship put my green card at risk?

It can, and any lawyer who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

It reopens your entire history, including the original residency filing. Since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, and that is answered with a Notice to Appear.

Does the interview happen in English?

The requirement is real and the exemptions are real too.

The civics and English requirements come from INA § 312. Age and years as a resident can remove the English half: 55 or older with 15 years, or 50 with 20. Civics can then be taken in your own language with an interpreter, at your expense.

Lea County.
Let's talk.

One call tells you which route you are on, whether anything already filed changes the path, and what the next twelve months actually look like. If the answer is not yet, we'll say so.
