Curry County, New Mexico · Immigration Law
The closest county we serve in New Mexico.
And it goes the other way.
You have been in Clovis a while. The kids came up through Clovis Municipal Schools, you can hear the trains and sometimes the aircraft, and the green card is still in the drawer where you put it.
Search for an immigration lawyer from here and you get Albuquerque, or a directory, or somebody who will ask you to call a 202 area code. You are not trying to learn immigration law. You are trying to work out who is real.
Start with something checkable.

The plain-English answer for Curry County
Naturalization is how a permanent resident becomes a U.S. citizen. Anywhere in Curry County, from Clovis to Texico, your case runs through the same federal office.
- Under INA § 316(a), the five-year route needs five years of continuous residence, 913 days of physical presence, and three months in this district before filing.
- Married to a citizen? INA § 319(a) cuts that to three years and 548 days, if the marriage holds the whole time.
One hundred miles east, and a different federal office than the rest of New Mexico.
US 60, US 70 and US 84 all run through Clovis. This office is in Lubbock. There is no Curry County office, there is no New Mexico office, and this page is not going to imply one. What we do have is the drive, and Clovis is the shortest one we make into this state.
One hundred miles changes something practical: it is a day, not a morning, so the first conversation happens by phone and nothing is batched with a guess. What we ask you to bring is what nobody expects. Not the green card, which everyone remembers, but the record of every trip out of the country, because the statute counts those in days.
A base town, a cheese plant and a railroad.
Clovis Municipal Schools enrolls 7,387 students (NCES, 2024-25) out of an office on North Main. Curry County runs on Cannon Air Force Base, on Southwest Cheese, the largest cheddar producer in North America, and on a BNSF hub that has moved freight through here for a century.
That mix matters for immigration in a way it does not in the farm counties. A base town has spouses and stepchildren who arrived on different papers at different times, and a plant and a railroad both run shifts that make a weekday appointment in another state a real scheduling problem. We plan around a shift rather than against it.
How a citizenship case runs from Curry County
- We read the file before you file anything. Applying reopens your whole immigration history under INA § 318, and since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, which is answered with a Notice to Appear rather than a denial. Better we find that than an officer does.
- We count the days, not the years. 913 or 548, counted from your actual travel. Saying "about two and a half years" is how a case gets denied for somebody who drives down to see family every December.
- Biometrics come first, and they are in Albuquerque. Not Lubbock and not El Paso. Curry County reports to Albuquerque for both federal steps.
- The examination is in Albuquerque too. You are never required to bring a lawyer at all, and we will tell you when you do not need one.
- We build the character record early. Two or more letters from U.S. citizens who are not family can support waiving the neighborhood investigation altogether. Almost nobody writes about this.
Everything we handle in Curry County
Naturalization leads this page because it is what most people here ask about first. It is not the only thing we do.
Getting a green card without leaving the country Petitioning a spouse, parent or child The provisional waiver, before anyone books a flight Consular processing and the interview in Ciudad Juárez Fiancé(e) visas Filing without an abuser's signature Finding out what's actually in your file Citizenship and naturalization
English and adult learning near Clovis
A family petition does not come with an English test. The case that usually follows it does. Once a relative is here and eventually files for citizenship, reading, writing and speaking English becomes a requirement, and for a lot of long-settled families that is the step that stalls everything years later. We have not yet verified an adult education provider inside Curry County, and we are not going to list one we have not checked. A law office prepares the case. A classroom prepares the person.
Questions we get from Curry County
Albuquerque, not El Paso.
Curry and Roosevelt counties go to Albuquerque. Lea, Chaves and Eddy go to El Paso. New Mexico is split, and which side you are on is decided by your address, not by which city is closer.
The first conversation easily. The two appointments, with notice.
Appointment dates come from the government, not from us, and they arrive with lead time. A hundred miles each way to Lubbock and a separate trip to Albuquerque both go on the calendar in advance.
It can, and any lawyer who tells you otherwise is selling you something.
It reopens your entire history, including the original residency filing. Since August 29, 2025 a voter registration you had forgotten about is screened as a false claim to citizenship, and that is answered with a Notice to Appear.
The requirement is real and the exemptions are real too.
The civics and English requirements come from INA § 312. Age and years as a resident can remove the English half: 55 or older with 15 years, or 50 with 20. Civics can then be taken in your own language with an interpreter, at your expense.

One call tells you which route you are on, whether anything already filed changes the path, and what the next twelve months actually look like. If the answer is not yet, we'll say so.
